The Mala is simple and ancient device that joins two parts of our humanity - our minds, which are often busy or distracted, and our hearts, or innermost nature, which naturally seek spiritual focus and awareness. Malas contain 108 beads or a division thereof, such as 27. Not counted are the larger Mother or Guru bead, representing the Eternal or Spirit, and the interval beads, which allow the heart's outflowing focus to become receptive and inflowing. 108 bead malas can be used for practice or worn around the neck as a "reminder" throughout the day. 27 bead malas can be worn bracelet-like or kept in one's pocket, purse, or car to help refocus as one falls asleep. Malas come in a wide variety of styles, made of a varity of wood and simi-precious stones, that are suitable for personal use and have been used for coutless centuries by many great spitual traditions. In the end, they are as universal as the yearning heart. |
