Statues, Page 2
Horus, represented by the falcon, was the son of gods Isis and Osiris. The Kings of Egypt associated themselves with Horus and the hieroglyph which
represented the idea of God was a falcon on its perch. A sun god, Horus was superior both physically and socially, representing the King and linking
the sun and the moon, the two primary celestial beings. Horus was worshipped throughout Egypt, and so many cults proliferated that many myths
sprang up associated with Horus. Throughout ancient Egyptian history, this god was personally identified with the king, as each succeeding pharaoh
used the name of Horus as the first of his titles.

The Arabic word from which the name bedouin is derived, is a simple, straightforward tag. It means "inhabitant of the desert," and refers generally to
the desert-dwelling nomads of Arabia, the Negev, and the Sinai. For most people, however, the word "bedouin" conjures up a much richer and more
evocative image--of lyrical, shifting sands, flowing robes, and the long, loping strides of camels.

he was usually depicted as a cat. As portrayed as a cat, she was connected with the moon (her son Khonsu was the god of the moon). When shown as a

The Kuikuro live in three main villages in the eastern region of upper Xingu National Park. Easily spotted from the sky, a typical Kuikuro village is built in a circular
clearing in the forest, the center of which is left open while homes are built around the edge. Though there are many special aspects to their culture, the Kuikuro
are best known for the advanced architecture of their homes and their basket weaving. They also have 17 formal ceremonies, each one dedicated to a specific
spirit. The most important ceremony is the “Feast of the Dead,” the highlight of which is intertribal wrestling. The Kuikuro are able to live entirely off of what the
rainforest and the nearby river provide, which includes eating unusual foods like turtle eggs and leafcutter ants. However, the Kuikuro’s livelihood is threatened by
the current government’s proposal to construct a massive dam called Belo Monte on the Xingu River. The Kuikuro people are actively protesting the construction of
this new dam, which will leave them without water, fish, or means of transport through the river.

Maasai Woman 6555 $29.50
The Maasai, famous as herders and warriors, once dominated the plains of East Africa. Now however they are confined to a fraction of their former range.
For the Maasai, cattle are what make the good life, and milk and meat are the best foods. Their old ideal was to live by their cattle alone – other foods they could
get by exchange – but today they also need to grow crops. They move their herds from one place to another, so that the grass has a chance to grow again;
traditionally, this is made possible by a communal land tenure system in which everyone in an area shares access to water and pasture. Nowadays Maasai have
increasingly been forced to settle, and many take jobs in towns. Maasai society is organised into male age-groups whose members together pass through
initiations to become warriors, and then elders. They have no chiefs, although each section has a Laibon, or spiritual leader, at its head. Maasai worship one god
who dwells in all things, but may manifest himself as either kindly or destructive.

Amenhotep IV 7160 $24.25
Lion Goddess 5102 $24.25
Guardian 5082 $24.25
Serket 5280 $24.25
Serket was the ancient Egyptian scorpion goddess of magic. As with other dangerous goddesses, she was both a protective goddess, and one who
punished the wrong doers with her burning wrath. She could punish those with the poison of a scorpion or snake, causing breathlessness and death,
or she could protect against the same venom. Yet just as she could kill, she was thought to give breath to the justified dead, helping them be reborn in
the afterlife.
The ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet is known as the Eye of Ra. She is the power that protects the good and annihilates the wicked. Sekhmet is the
wrathful form of Hathor (goddess of joy, music, dance, sexual love, pregnancy and birth). With leonine head, female human body and the strength of
her father, she is the noontime sun --- intense blinding heat.
Hathor was the Egyptian mother goddess and goddess of all that is best in women. In her aspect as goddess of music and dancing, her emblem was
the sistrum, an ancient musical percussion instrument. All Egyptian women worshiped her, from the queen to the lowliest woman of the land, and she
was the protectress of pregnant women.
The tenth king of the 18th Dynasty was perhaps the most controversial because of his break with traditional religion. Some say that he was the most
remarkable king to sit upon Egypt’s throne. Akhenaten was traditionally raised by his parents, Amenhotep III and Queen Tiy (1382-1344 B.C.) by
worshipping Amen. Akhenaten, however, preferred Aten, the sun god that was worshipped in earlier times. Early in his reign he changed his name to
Akhenaten, meaning “He Who is of Service to Aten” and renamed his queen to Nefer-Nefru-Aten, which is “Beautiful is the Beauty of Aten.” The king
and his queen, leaving Thebes behind, built elaborate buildings at Akhenaten (Amarna) “The Horizon of Aten.” He then sent his officials around to
destroy Amen’s statues and to desecrate the worship sites. These actions were so contrary to the traditional that opposition arose against him. The
estates of the great temples of Thebes, Memphis and Heliopolis reverted to the throne. Corruption grew out of the mismanagement of such large
levies. Akhenaten died in the 18th year of his reign. His successor, Horemhab, claimed his reign began from the date of Amenhotep III, thus wiping out
the entire rule of Akhenaten.
Egyptian god of the dead, represented as a black jackal or dog, or as a man with the head of a dog or jackal. He was the guide of the dead as they
made their way through the darkness of the underworld. As a patron of magic, it was believed he could foresee a persons destiny, in this role he was
the announcer of death. God of orphans, travelers, and the lost.
Anubis, also known as Anpu and Anu-Oobist, is the jackal god of embalming. He is the Opener of the Way, or as some might prefer to call him the
Guardian of the Veil. To some he was God of Embalming, Mummification, Guardian and Guide to the Spirits of the Deceased, Patron of Orphans and
Lost Souls, God of Magic, and the Egyptian Personification of Time.
He was also considered a great messenger, one who carried messages from the Underworld to the Gods and Goddesses of the Heavens, as well as from
these deities to mankind itself. He was a diplomat with a dark and sardonic nature, but showing of compassion. He served a vital role to both the
peoples and the scheme of the Gods.

Bedouin On Camel Back 6387 $18.50

Himba Woman with Children 5771 $49.50
Typically, the Himba woman will perform more chores than the men, in particular the more labor intensive activities, such as milking cows and goats, hauling
water from the river, raising children, carrying firewood and constructing homes. Despite the prominent role by Himba women in Himba society, they are not
strictly matrilineal as are many African tribes. In fact, they are both matrilineal and patrilineal, in that each member of the Himba tribe is a member of two
clans, that of their mother and that of their father. This is referred to by anthropologists as bilateral descent, an uncommon pattern that only occurs in a few
cultures around the world. The bilateral descent of Himba society may be an adaptation to the extreme desert conditions in which they live in that an
individual can rely on both their father’s and mother’s families for support in times of emergencies. That said, the son typically lives with his father’s clan.
However, he does not inherit his father’s wealth, rather that of his mother’s brother (maternal uncle). Conversely, a Himba woman will live with her husband’s
clan after marriage. This bilatral descent is unique, occurring in very few african tribes.

Responsible For: Justice, Law and Order, Immortality, Primordial Being
Totemic Form: Feather
Ma'at was the primeval Egyptian goddess of truth and justice. She gave the breath of life to the gods.
In funerary scenes and pictures depicting the underworld, the figure of Ma'at or her feather was placed on the opposite side of the scale from the heart
of the deceased. If the scale balanced, the deceased was allowed to go on to the afterlife. If not, s/he was given to Ammit to devour. Thus the red
plume of Ma'at itself became a hieroglyph for "truth".
Those who lived by the laws of Ma'at took a sacramental drink which conferred ritual purity in the same sense as the Christian Holy Communion. Like
baptismal water of life, Ma'at's potion brought life after death to the peaceful and law-abiding, but death to violent persons.
